A list of websites I have found helpful and interesting in understanding the history and culture of Tiree, and of other Western Isles, and emigration of people from these islands to what were then almost unknown countries on the other side of the world.
An Iodhlann Tiree's historical centre. It's Reading Room at Scarinish houses an extensive collection of photographs, recordings, letters, maps, family trees, and other papers relating to every aspect of island life, and is a must for vistors of Tiree descent. A large selection of items from its collection of documents, photographs and sound clips can be downloaded from the website.
Tiree Community Website Everything about Tiree in a user-friendly format - history, culture, transport, accommodation, and where to go and what to see on the island. Recommended reading if you're planning to visit.
Images of Tiree Jim Murdoch's outstanding collection of photographs of Tiree, and notes on the island's history, culture, weather, wildlife, and activities. Recommended reading.
Tiree Gatherings A site dedicated to gatherings of Tiree descendants, with reports on past gatherings and notices of future gatherings.
The Hebridean Trust The Trust's charter is to preserve and conserve the historical and natural heritage of the Hebrides. The Tiree pages describe places to visit and things to see. A small selection of good photographs.
Isle of Coll Genealogy The 'twin website' of Isle of Tiree Genealogy. Coll is similar in size to Tiree but much more rugged, and separated from it by the narrow Gunna Sound. Its people suffered severely from the evictions of the 1840s and 1850s.
Mull Genealogy Ian Phillips' comprehensive website assisting family history research for those having ancestors from the Isle of Mull. There were close family links between Mull and the nearby islands of Tiree and Coll.

Scotlands People Website of the General Register Office for Scotland. The official online site for old parish registers, civil registrations, census results, and wills and testaments.
Highland & Island Emigration Society The Society assisted imoverished Scots families to emigrate to Australia. A total of 4,910 people, some from Tiree, Coll or Mull, were assisted in the years 1852-1857. This site describes the history of the Society, and lists the names and other information about those assisted.
